Our sustainability begins with our rejection of any ingredients derived from the petroleum industry. Such ingredients (i.e. petrolatum, mineral oil) are both unsustainable and harmful to the environment.
We refrain from using palm oil in any of its forms. Palm oil is one of the most common ingredients in cosmetics because it is cheap and effective, but it has large negative environmental impacts. The acquisition of palm oil is one of the primary reasons for rainforest deforestation, produces high carbon emissions, contributes to pushing species to the brink of extinction, and has been associated with widespread human rights violations.
These two ingredients are the largest sustainability concerns in cosmetics. There are many other ingredients that we choose to avoid for similar reasons.
The majority of our containers are either glass or metal. Both of these materials are sustainable and recyclable, the gold standard for responsible packaging. For other products, such as our deodorant, we have chosen to use eco-friendly paperboard containers that are renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable. However, in some cases we must use plastic for safety concerns. We just can't have you taking a glass bottle of shampoo into your shower. Our hope is that as we grow, we can use increased buying power to work with manufacturers to find alternative solutions, such as recycled plastic. Stay tuned for these updates.
We've recently switch to using labels made of stone, and we are incredibly excited about this opportunity! Yes, you read that right: The labels are made of stone, which comes from excess mining waste. These labels have a lower environmental impact than plastic and paper alternatives.
Our vision is that every person who has a hand in our manufacturing process, from the processing of ingredients and packaging to the production itself, will be properly compensated and valued. To the best of our ability, we interact with our distributors and their suppliers to ensure this vision. While we do not currently have the capabilities to visit all of the facilities that produce our packaging and ingredients, we work tirelessly to ensure our standards are being met. Our hope is that as we grow, our ability to maintain these standards will also grow.
O’Douds is proudly manufactured in the U.S.A. This is important because not only do we love this country and the people in it, but we contribute to the economy by supplying quality jobs.
